Modeling tool
Gear
Create a parametric external spur gear or internal ring gear from standard involute tooth geometry.
Purpose
Create a parametric external spur gear or internal ring gear from standard involute tooth geometry.
Where to find it
Open Model, open Create, and choose Gear.
Selection
- No selection is required. Optionally choose a construction or world axis in Details.
Steps
- Set Module and Teeth in the command bar.
- Open Details to choose the gear type, position, tooth geometry, and bore or outer ring.
- Review Calculated Geometry, then tap Apply.
Options
Module
Controls tooth size and therefore the pitch diameter; larger modules create larger teeth.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Teeth
Sets the integer tooth count used to calculate the pitch diameter.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Thickness
Sets the axial thickness of the generated gear body.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Type
External creates teeth around a solid gear; Internal creates teeth inside an outer ring.
ExternalInternal
Axis
Chooses the world or construction axis used as the gear centerline.
Offset
Moves the gear along its selected axis; negative values move in the opposite direction.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Pressure Angle
Sets the involute pressure angle from 10 through 35 degrees.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Backlash
Removes material between mating teeth to provide circumferential clearance; zero creates nominal tooth thickness.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Bore Diameter
Sets the center bore for an External gear; zero produces no bore.
Available when: Shown for External gears.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Outer Diameter
Sets the outside diameter and rim thickness of an Internal gear.
Available when: Shown for Internal gears.
ƒ Accepts variables and expressions
Calculated Geometry
Read-only Pitch, Tip or Outside, Root, and ring dimensions calculated from the current inputs.
Result
Apply adds a parametric Gear feature and new body to History.
Editing
Open the Gear feature in History to change any parameter; calculated diameters and downstream geometry rebuild.
Troubleshooting
The gear preview fails or teeth overlap the bore or ring.
Increase the tooth count or module, reduce the bore, enlarge the internal Outer Diameter, and keep backlash below the available tooth thickness.
